When I was younger, growing up in south Florida I really did not care much for fall. It really seemed to me that it was the beginning of browning trees and shrubs, cold weather and everything that goes along with the cold. Sweaters, warm milk toast, less daylight hours to play outside, dark walks to the school bus stop in the morning, etc.
Fall & Winter Decorating Thoughts
Later, after I joined the Army in my early 20’s, living in Germany twice (seeing snow for the first time and learning to shovel snow), Korea, Kansas (Icicles and ice storms), South Carolina and Georgia my outdoors attitude towards Fall was further strengthened.
Not to mention the layers of clothing the Army issues, Cold Weather Jacket, Leather Gloves and Wool Inserts, Cold Weather Cap, and Mickey Mouse Boots; later learning to add Gortex, Under Armor and Thermal Hand Warmers not to mention Coleman camping gear and heaters.
The exception was that the holidays became a time of celebration indoors with my husband (when not in the field training or deployed), son and Army friends and family, filled with many childhood traditions that somehow made it feel more like a home away from home.
Decorations, food and the likes of holiday get togethers became familiarity during the holidays to replace feeling homesick. For the most part, the cold, dreary weather was outside, and the warm memories were on the inside.
Now that I am retired from military service (husband also), my son is engaged to be married to a beautiful young woman and they have a home of their own, I have realized what I believe is the most important part of the journey.
While decorating my home this past weekend for fall (Halloween and Thanksgiving), thinking about each special holiday to come this year, I realized that the decorations, the weather and all is the best part.
It is the preparation for each special holiday that brings with its cooler weather, heart and soul warming food particular to each of the holidays to come, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Preparing for holiday celebrations with Family and Friends fills me with excitement and anticipation of my favorite season of the year! It’s good to be home for the holidays!
