The Netflix original Fuller House Premiered this past Friday, and it got me thinking about multigenerational living. How do these three women, three children, and one infant plan on living together in this California home? Is this even possible outside of that studio set?
Multigenerational living is all around us, and it is on the rise. The American family dynamic is changing once more to include multiple generations under one roof. The Fuller House spin-off is just a reflection of what is already happening in the world around us. Here are some things to consider about multigenerational living.
Multigenerational Living Makes A Fuller House
In our post-recession economy people are more cautious with their money. From a purely fiscal standpoint multigenerational living is cost effective. One mortgage can be used to finance houses with in-law suites, apartment areas, and split floor plans. This means that every adult in the home can contribute to the mortgage down payment, mortgage payment, upkeep, and bills. This type of finical situation is ideal for seniors, adults, and young adults. Who wouldn’t benefit from an affordable living situation?
I know that a lot of readers are going to see this and think “That sounds nice and I’d love to save money, but there is no way I could live with ____”. You have to understand that multigenerational living is a process. You are try to fit people with different needs, lifestyles, and personalities under one roof. So, it is important to have a clear understanding of the needs and expectations of each member. Then, you have to find the house that fits these needs of each member. (Notice I said needs and not wants…big difference)
Having an awesome realtor for this type of situation is going to help you a lot, because that person is going to be your mediator and reality-checker. Most importantly they are going to inform you about all of the different multigenerational living options that exist. It is important to remember that there is not a one-size-fits-all multigenerational house, but there are many variations and styles in today’s market.
In my opinion the greatest aspect of multigenerational living is the connection and support that you receive. Grandparents, parents, and children all get to interact with one another on a day to day basis, creating deeper and more meaningful relationships. Granted there are going to be bumps in the road, but ultimately I believe that the emotional benefits would be great. So, maybe we should tune in and see what we can learn from TV’s new multigenerational family.
